The Founding of Haygood
In 1926, Druid Hills Methodist Episcopal Church, South, decided to give birth to a new church, named for brother and sister, Bishop Atticus Greene Haygood and Laura Askew Haygood.
Atticus Haygood served as a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and president of Emory University.
Laura Haygood was a foreign missionary to China and educator. She was a strong proponent of equal education for women. She also organized home mission societies that provided food and shelter to the disadvantaged in Atlanta. Her work with the poor included establishing an industrial school to train people in the skills needed to hold self-supporting jobs. Here’s a good video about Laura. Click here.
Haygood continues to incorporate their witness of education, advocacy and mission work. We educate the next generation through our Weekday Children’s Ministries, recreation ministries and our weekly programming for children and youth.
