Haygood Memorial UMC Vision for Ministry
Haygood Memorial UMC is a fellowship that provides excellent ministry to children and youth, educational classes, loving congregational care and dynamic worship. There is vitality and excitement in the congregation. Haygood folks are good neighbors, friends in need to anyone and everyone in the reach of our influence, in the Morningside community and beyond. As you can tell by our horizon logo, people working hand in hand is what we are all about. This logo, created by graphic designer Mike Dellinger, illustrates our ministry.
As your pastor, I want to encourage us to embrace all we are while constantly trying to be more than we have ever been before. Our ministry initiative for 2008 is to get every member and every family to be involved in mission. We are building another Habitat House this spring; we are serving at the Women's Day Shelter; we are sorting donations at the Food Bank. The Missions Committee has prepared a comprehensive list of projects so that each and every one of us can be involved. This information will be shared in our publications and on this website throughout the year.
Will you accept God's call to reach out in specific concrete ways to help others? Let's dedicate ourselves to the highest ideals in Christian ministry, in our stewardship, in our discipleship, and in accepting our call to be God's people in mission and ministry. Together we can build on our heritage so that all might "know and serve God with Heart and Mind" in our congregation, in our community and out there in the street.
Our Mission as United Methodists
"The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs." (United Methodist Book of Discipline, p.87.)
We make disciples as we:
- Proclaim the gospel, seek, welcome, and gather persons into the Body of Christ;
- Lead persons to commit their lives to God through baptism and profession of faith in Jesus Christ;
- Nurture persons in Christian living through worship, the sacraments, spiritual disciplines, and other means of grace;
- Send persons into the world to live lovingly and justly as servants of Christ by healing the sick, feeding the hungry, caring for the stranger, freeing the oppressed, becoming a compassionate caring presence, and working to develop social structures that are consistent with the gospel.

Haygood Memorial UMC is a Safe Sanctuaries Church
The General Conference of the United Methodist Church, in April, 1996, adopted a resolution aimed at reducing the risk of child abuse in the church. The adopted resolution calls for all churches to welcome the children and youth and also to make our churches safe places for them to grow and learn. It is our responsibility to be proactive in our recruiting and training to find people with a gift for caring for children and youth, and also to protect those volunteers from false accusations. It is also our responsibility to oversee all programs involving children and youth to make sure there is a safe environment and to have in place a plan of response should an accusation arise. The General Conference affirmed that every local church should have in place a policy for protecting children.
